Role Description

A Captioner is a customer service-oriented team member, critical to achieving iYellow Captions’ mission of advancing equitable communication access through transcription of the spoken word. The Captioner can caption (onsite and/or remotely) 180 or more words per minute with a high level of accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Caption (onsite and/or remotely) of 180 or more words per minute with a high level of accuracy
  • Proficient use and ability to troubleshoot court reporting steno equipment, real time software, and related computer systems and equipment.
  • Proficiently write in real-time with a conflict-free manner using punctuation, advanced editing skills, and sustaining accuracy in fast-paced situation
  • Comprehensive knowledge of English language; including grammatical structures, syntax, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation
  • Working knowledge of the language and vocabulary used in the assigned translating situations
  • General knowledge of Deaf and hard of hearing culture
  • Maintain confidentiality

Requirements

  • Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC) and/or Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR)
  • Ability to balance multiple auditory and visual demands simultaneously
  • Has a thorough knowledge of the captioning process in government, academic and professional settings
  • Demonstrate understanding of the communication needs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals
  • Possess extensive knowledge of the vocabulary, terminology, and basic information in assigned settings and on a variety of subjects
  • Possess knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matter
  • Professional decorum and ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to the ethical standards outlined in the Code of Professional Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Practice for the NCRA and/or CCRA
